SUMARY | Objective. To evaluate the response of the BRT AiM and Delvotest methods in antimicrobial-free sheep's milk obtained during lactation, in combination with the effect of the addition of preservatives or preheating treatment of the samples. Methodology. Milk samples were collected from the morning milking of 20 ewes every 2 weeks, from 15 days postpartum to the end of lactation. A total of 929 samples were analyzed by BRT AiM with prediffusion and Delvotest microbial tests. Results. The specificity of the preservative-free milk samples without heat treatment was high (96.3% for BRT and 97.7% for Delvotest), and the results improved for those samples heat-treated at 82 °C / 10 min (99 % for BRT and 98.7% for Delvotest). Potassium dichromate produced total inhibition of Bacillus stearothermophilus growth with both methods. |
When acidiol was used, the specificity
of the samples not heat-treated was lower
compared to the milk samples without
preservatives for the BRT AiM (90.2%) and
Delvotest (91.0%) methods, improving when the
samples were heat-treated, both for BRT AiM
(94.8%) and Delvotest (95.3%), since the
presence of the preservative increased the
frequency of doubtful results. The lactation stage
significantly affected the results of the methods,
with a higher frequency of false positive and
doubtful cases at the end of the cycle, especially
in those samples preserved with acidiol.
Conclution. The highest selectivity in both
methods was obtained for samples of sheep's
milk without preservatives with previous heat
treatment taken at the beginning or in the middle
of the lactation period.
